I think my power supply is failing, but i'm not completely sure.

I left my computer on overnight last night and when I woke up it was still on. I left and came back about thirty minutes later and my room had a feint smell of "electric burning" and my computer was off. Usually my gtx 1070 has a light on indicating power but nope nothing. I unplugged my 1070 and it turned on. So I figured it was a gpu problem, and just plugged in my last graphics card, gtx 770. I plug everything in and turn on my computer its all powered, up but there is no display on the screen, and it says signal could not be found. Then my computer shuts down and restarts, and continues to do this until I just give up.

What could this be and is it fixable or is it a damaged piece of hardware. Thanks for the help

UPDATE: So after powering my computer on with my 770 it restarted once after about 20 seconds of running, then stayed on. After it stayed on my computer did not boot (no logo, or bios), nothing, it just said no signal. I took my psu out and checked it with a volt meter and all the reading came up good, no problems.

Computer Specs:
EVGA Geforce 1070 (switching back to my 770 in the post)

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard

Corsair CS750M PSU

Intel I5 4690k cpu

16gb ram

1tb hdd

Well, first off plug the display cable into the motherboard and see if it boots up that way AND doesn't restart.

Is this a new build? How much watt is your PSU? did you try it with the 1070 in again(not recommending it)? Do you have another PSU to try? so many questions need to be answered.

I tried plugging it into the mobo still nothing, it is not a new build. The gpu is about a year old but other than that it's about a few years old, with the exception of ram and hdd upgrades gear and there. I did not try it again with the 1070, and my psu output is 750. I don't have another psu I could try.

Update: it doesn't seem to be restarting anymore but there is still no signal on my monitor, and the capslock scroll lock and num lock lights won't come on, so I think it's a problem with the computer itself.

Most likely it is your PSU. HOWEVER; if it is your PSU there is a possibility that it took out other components (ie MB, drives). SO Until you can rule out the PSU it is NOT advisable to keep trying to power the MB.
To check out the PSU.
1) Use a tester ($15-> $30). For example
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899705003&cm_re=power_supply_testers-_-99-705-003-_-Product
Others: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=power+supply+testers&ignorear=0&N=-1&isNodeId=1

2nd method is to measure the voltages with a digital volt Meter (Multimeter).
Measure the voltages at a Molex connector. Place black meter lead into one of the two center socket (Has Black wires). Then Place the Red meter lead into either end socket. (Red is +5V and Yellow Or orange lead is +12V
Voltages should read within ± 5%, If NOT then DO NOT use PSU and R&R PSU.

If these voltages are Good, Still does not rule out PSU as both of the above methods do NOT put much load on the PSUs, SO then if PSU check good using method 1 or 2 then:
Plug PSU into MB and repeat voltage measurements at Molex connector.

What *exactly* is your PSU? 750 is the rated output, but the build quality and age are far more important things to know here.

It sounds a lot like your PSU anyway. It would be far less unlikely to be a CPU problem - if the CPU is actually fried, it's usually due to *another* malfunctioning part, typically a PSU, and simply replacing the CPU doesnt fix the problem.

I updated my original post with specs, and something new has happened. I'm not sure where to go from here. Like I said in the update it does power up and stay on with my 770, but shows no signal on the monitor. But when I plug my 1070 in it will not power up at all.

Thanks for the help

I checked the psu with a multimeter and it came up good. I'm going to plug it back into the mobo and give it another shot with the molex. Also I updated my post if you want to take a look at that for more details.
