Computer Specs
Macbook Pro, Retina, Late 2012. 2.5 GHz i5. 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB.
Description of problem
I bought an used Macbook that has display issues for $40. Soon after turning the computer on, the screen will freeze and will do one of two things: it will either slowly fade to black or it will get horizontal lines as seen here - https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/AffectionateJampackedAmericanlobster[1] . While its frozen, the keyboard and mouse are still responsive.
It happens randomly, even under little to no load. Sometimes the display can be working fine for 15 minutes or more but then the issue pops up.
I can get the screen to temporarily work again by adjusting its position to find a sweet spot or by pushing the screen all the way open and applying a bit of pressure near the hinge.
I have also taken it into a local repair shop, and the guy looked at it for about 2 minutes and said I'd need to replace the entire screen (~$500 cost, which is more than I want to spend). I have tried connecting it to another display and it works just fine. If swapping out the display is the only way to fix the problem, I'll probably just hook it up to my TV and use it as an HTPC...but it would be nice to use it as a laptop since it's a big upgrade to my 10 year old regular Mac. Any chance it could just be a loose connection? Thanks.
