Hi,

I recently purchased the ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 STRIX Overclocked 6GB GDDR5 Video Card w/ FanConnect. When installing the GPU I didn't connect any motherboard connections to my GPU that is allowed through FanConnect as stated by ASUS / Republic of Gamers.

During IDLE my GPU's fans are off and even when I play a game like Bully's Scholarship (an old game by Rockstar Games) my GPU usage can be at <=15% and it will still be off. However, I have played Dota 2 and Rust and my GPU fan's do turn on when I am in game.

Does anybody know why this is happening and do I need to connect the fan motherboard pins are directed to use this FanConnect thing?

Thanks and I appreciate all feedback.

Some of MSI cards fans dont turn on till they hit 60c. They call it ZERO FROZR-STAY UNDETECTED. These companys keep trying to one up the other so im sure more card makers are doing this.

Why should I consider using this? Is it really needed and is it optional or not? I am just curious as to why it might be used.

Thanks everyone for their posts so far!

Yes it is normal, and has been for a long time. They learned back with the 6xx line the ball bearings wear out FAST if the FANs are kept on ALL the time, even when the GPU isn't generating alot of heat. They lowered the heat build up and in turn turn 'off' the use of the FANS until it really needs it. So nothing to worry about.
