Will a smartphone get ruined even if the case is still intact?

I have a lifeproof case on my S8. I drop it very rarely and it holds up well. Will the internal components get damaged or cause problems from recurring drops even if the case is perfectly fine?

My phone screen broke even though it has a case for protection. Breaking the screen is the main concern, I haven't seen or heard hardware/internal components get damaged by accidental drops or fall (rare case).
