Please forgive me if there is a very obvious answer to this.

I have just been given my friends ssd as he has a new pc. When I've plugged this into my pc and turned it on, it now opens as my friends pc instead of mine. I can only assume that this is because he left windows installed on his ssd before giving it to me.

I was going to transfer my windows over to the ssd anyway and then do a fresh recovery of my pc as it's a lot slower than it should be.

What would be the best way to do this now?

You can also try using the boot menu (on mine it is F12) and then choose your old hard drive to boot from. Once in there you can format the SSD and then use Macrium Reflect to clone your hard drive to it. Then you can boot to the SSD and it should be identical to your old hard drive. Your old hard drive can then be wiped and used as extra storage or as a backup drive.
