These are my parts
fx 8120 overclocked to 4.0ghz
660ti overclocked +225 core and +625 memory
16gb ddr3 1600 ram
asus m5a97 mob

I was wondering if i would bottleneck if i put a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB G1 GAMING in my system. My buddy has one for sale and will sell it to me for cheap.

GTX970 is a nice boost so if the price is right buy it.
You will see the benefit in fast action shooters.

You might want to Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

A little bit but not bad. I had a 970 with a 8350 and worked ok. I did experance bottle necking but it really depends on the game .

The main 2 games i play are

csgo 80 fps average on max settings and 105 fps on low with cpu usage of 40-60 both settings

h1z1 60 fps max settings and 80 fps low settings with cpu average usage of 70 on both settings

both games were played at 1080p

The CPU for sure will be your bottleneck if any. They are not the strongest CPUs and actually being phased out currently due to age and new Ryzen line up.

If you plan on doing any upgrades in the near future. I'd recommend you invest in a system replacement (new CPU, board, memory etc..) instead of upgrading anything your current system.

That CPU will be your bottleneck in any future upgrades. It just wouldn't be worth it.

It depends on the game. If you are overclocking you will need to have a good PSU. If i were me i wouldnt bother overlocking cpu
