I have a NZXT S340 Elite Case, with 2 exhaust fans 120mm Bequiet! SIlver wings 2 (I know I should replace the top one for a 140mm will do in the future). I'm using a Kraken x61 too cool my I7 6700k. So far my issue is that recently my 1080 is hitting 85-86C temperatures and it didn't do that before max load was 71-73C. my room temperature is 77-80 Fahrenheit . My cpu is 34-36C idle and so is my 1080 atm the moment. I created a fan curve with MSI afterburner. I also change back the core voltage to its default. While gaming FFXIV the game crash twice and I saw the temperature of my 1080 hit 86C. I updated the drivers, and created the fan curve. I've check my case by touching the glass, the back panel and under the case and there is no heat. The case is quite cool and a little warm on the glass panel compare to the rest of the case. Hope somebody can give me a few pointers. Will test to see if the issue is resolved with the changes I've made.

Solution

First increase the fan speed to 100 using Afterburner. It's the fourth slider. (note: you need to click "auto" first). Then in afterburner you will see a letter K aka Kombuster. Click on it and it will stress your GPU. Monitor the temps at the bottom (graph). They should be around 70 after ~10 mins. If they are over 80, close the window and...

After doing some benchmarks and what not my 1080 stay below 70C and only hit 71C on some occasions but the average temperature was around 67C. A huge improvement, also my card is running at 1960MHZ-2030MHZ. My CPU was running on an average of 51C never passed 54C. My room temperature was 79C. Normally my CPU is around 40-44C while gaming. So far it seems things are looking good. Will keep testing to see if the temperatures stay the same.

my room temperature is 77-80C

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm I hope that's a typo.... If not, then there you have it that's the issue. Though I have no idea how you survive in a room at that temperature.

my 1080 is hitting 85-86C
That's a lot for your card (assuming your room temp is around 30C and not 80C). If you have the MSI Gaming App, make sure to turn off the "Twin FROZR" option. How many fans do you have on the case other than the CPU cooler fans? I set up my fan to run at 80% constantly through MSI After burner. Card doesn't go over 50-60C.

Sorry that was a typo I meant 78-80 Fahrenheit. My case only has 4 fans slots available. I'm using 2 140mm fans slots for the kraken x61 located on the front of the case. the other 2 slots are 1 rear 120mm fan and 1 top 120mm/140mm fan ( I'm using a 120mm atm for the top fan slot). Also I do not have the MSI gaming App. Should I downloaded and turn of the Twin FROZR option like you mentioned?

If they are over 80, close the window and return the card/get it fixed using your warranty. It's defective.

If they stay around 70, there's no problem with your card.

Yes get the MSI gaming app. You can also control the LEDs of your card using it so it's useful anyway. Turn off Twin FROZR. Run a few stress tests.

I was just playing GTA 5 on 1440p (2k) resolution for an hour or so. I forced my cards to run at 100% speed. My card was at 45C. Which is very impressive.

is it healthy for the card when the fans are running constantly on 80% will that cause any issues or not. I will checkout what you mentioned and post results. Also what have you set for the temperature limit on MSI afterburner?

Okay I did what you suggested haven't install MSI gaming app yet and the card stayed at 69C when I had the temp limit set to 70C in after burner and when I set the temp limited to 73C I got 1.9GHZ compare to when the limit was set to 70C I was getting 1.7GHZ.

Looks normal to me. I leave the temp limit on default (I think it's 80 not sure will check and get back to you). In the gaming app select OC mode and it will overclock it for you automatically with the optimal settings.
