Hi all,

So im looking into getting a laptop and ive been shopping around on fleebay. I keep seeing the "u" variants of laptops and im just a bit confused by them- as far as i understand it most of "u" cpus are only 2 cores and then the i7's having hyperthreading.

I would mainly use the laptop for Photoshop, Uni work and a bit of gaming but im wondering if its better to get something like a "true" quad core i5 or a hyperthreaded i7?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not as clear-cut as it used to be, but generally

  • ■i5 U CPUs are dual core, turbo boost, hyperthreading, 3 MB of cache (some now have 4 MB)
■i7 U CPUs are dual core, turbo boost, hyperthreading, 4 MB of cache
■i5 HQs CPUs are quad core, turbo boost, no hyperthreading. 6 MB of cache

For your use, it's a tough call. The quad core would seem the obvious choice, except this is a laptop for use at school. The quad cores have a 45W TDP vs 15W for the dual cores, so run hotter and get substantially worse battery life. That might be uncomfortable and inconvenient if you're using the laptop a lot at lectures. Photoshop won't really fully use a quad core unless you're using a lot of filters. Gaming is hit and miss. The online games which have to track lots of other player entities typically can use the extra cores. The single player games or games with a limited number of player entities (e.g. DOTA 2) generally are fine with a dual core.

tbh i only really play Rainbow six siege and I study Product design so i sit in a studio rather than a lecture hall never more than a foot away from a power source. I have found an HP Omen with a 6300HQ for cheaper than most i7 "u" variants so i think il go with that (im looking into second hand laptops as my budget is not so great).
