I bought a WD NAS drive and i am copying 2tb of data across a LAN through wireless. The speed is ridiculous to say the least. The router i have says its capable of 300 megabits/sec (37.5 megabytes/sec) i am getting 6 megabytes/sec at best which tells me the speed is close to 54 megabits/sec. My question is would interference be likely to cause this although it seems strange it doesn't go a hair over 6 megabytes/sec or is it the Ethernet cables used (standard one that came in the NAS box). If possible id like to look at why this is before spend $200 on a new gigabit router. Any suggestions appreciated.

No problem, Issue with these routers are they are advertised at higher speed just for show, the WiFi cards in the router are capable of high speed in theory but they use 100 mbps switch in the router and usually a crappy one so all depends on the switch when it negotiate with a device it can reduce the speed of data to make sure its not getting corrupted.
This will work fine for you once you have copied the data as 54mbps is not slow speed for day to day use over wifi also if you go with A/C router you will need A/C card on the computer also plus your NAS needs to be 10/1000 not 10/100.
This all could also be cause of slow write speed of NAS HDD as they tend to be 5400rpm or if you are copying small files. Your best option is USB 3.0 for...

you can't get full speed over wifi that's almost impossible, Best way will be to use gigabit Ethernet via cables to transfer data or usb 3.0 of that's possible or it will take weeks to get 2 tb transferred.
I don't wanna go into details as it will get really long but a 300mbps router most likely have a 100mbps lan ports and its most likely working as half duplex so you are standing at 54mbps or so on top you will have packet loss over time with wifi that will increase the transfer time more.

thanks for your response, i dont understand why it would be so low would you mind briefly explaining the half duplex situation? also is the short answer buy a gigabit router then?
