Hi,
I've been saving up money for upgrading my pc for a while now and i would like some different perspectives on my current plan/ideas.

I am going to be upgrading to a Ryzen CPU, but i am not sure what cpu and cooler to pick.
the CPU is going to be paired with a GTX 1070 that i already have and the motherboard will probably be a MSI pro carbon gaming x370, although i am not certain about that yet.

I have been considering either R7 1700X or R5 1600X for the CPU.
I am going to be using the pc as a "workstation" aswell as gaming at 1080p on high/ultra in most games.
I am open to other CPU suggestions but the price can't exceed the 1700x.

I have read the 1700X is overkill for gaming, but then i read somewhere else that in the future games will utilize more cores, so i'm not sure if i should future proof or not.

As for the cooler i've been considering the MasterLiquid 240 (non-pro), but i have no idea if it's a good cooler, budget is important to me though so the top-of-the line coolers are not an option.

Things i want to do on my pc:

  • - Programming
    - Image Editing (photoshop and similar)
    - Streaming to Twitch
    - Using Chrome(probably not important but i thought i would mention it)
    - Possibly a bit of video editing (although nothing major)

Any help/insight is appriciated as this will only be my second build.

Solution
They'll fry nust like a non x there's nothing inherently different. With a dh14 or 12u fit in your case? They'd both work well.

the cooler is too tall for my case... it's 3mm too tall to be accurate, and there's not a lot of AM4 coolers available where i live, so i have to buy a new case if i go with that cooler.

i was planning to go with the X chips because i read they're harder to fry accidently when overclocking(i'm new to overclocking so i'm concerned i will damage the CPU).

if you don't mind, can you recommend any b350 boards?
i'v read some of them overclock better than others, and i would like this CPU and motherboard to last me a couple of years before i make another upgrade.
