Im planning to add an ssd to my pc and have it as my boot drive and put some programs and games on it. At the same time I want to upgrade my os from windows 7 to 10. So now im a bit confused as to how to go about it.
Should I just plug in the ssd and install the new os on it and then keep the old drive, just deleting the old os? Would that work with the programs i already have installed or would that lead to problems? Or should i just wipe the old hhd completely?
Thanks

If you do not want to reinstall your programs, here is how I would go about it.

1. Buy a Samsung evo ssd of sufficient capacity to hold the contents of your current C drive.
2. Use the free Samsung ssd migration tool to move your C drive to the ssd.
3. Remove your hard drive and replace it with the ssd. Your hard drive serves as a proven backup is anything should go wrong.
4. Do your upgrade from 7 to 10.
5. When all is working, reattach your hard drive and do with it what you will. You can reformat it or just delete selected folders.

For specific cloning steps...this:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:
