Hi,
I am thinking of getting the Maximus IX Hero motherboard. But in the specs it says:
"Supports DisplayPort 1.2 with max. resolution 4096 x 2304 @ 60Hz".
I have a ultrawide monitor at 3440x1440 and 100Hz. Does this mean that the motherboard won't allow the display to go to 100Hz?

Also, my current RAM is DDR 3 2133 (PC3 17000). Will that work on the Maximus?

Thanks

My Rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 3.5Ghz O/C to 4.6Ghz
GPU: GeForce GTX 1080FTW2 Gaming iCX
Monitor: 34 inch @ 3440x1440 Asus ROG PG348Q
Motherboard: Asrock Z97 Extreme 4
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D14
PSU: EVGA 750W ATX12V
RAM: G.Skill - Ripjaws X - 16GB (DDR3 2133)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4
Windows 10

Yeah I missed that somehow.

To OP, don't do that you're suggesting, it's a waste of money for the additional performance you'll be getting. It makes no sense to move from one non-hyperthreaded quad-core to another. You would be better off going all out and getting a 7700k instead.

But honestly the thing that'll hold you back the most at this resolution is the GPU. If you want to save some money but improve performance anyway, maybe seek...

Ok so does this mean that since my GPU supports higher Hz the mobo doesn't matter?
Also with regards to my other question, is my RAM supported?

Yes, your integrated graphics' output capabilities are completely irrelevant since you will be using your dedicated GPU's outputs (the GTX 1080).

Yes, your RAM will work in the motherboard (Z97 motherboards support DDR3, you have DDR3).

The Maximus requires DDR4 ram, so no it will NOT support your DDR3 ram.
What CPU are you getting?

He Has the Z97 and is going to the Maximus IX hero

I was thinking of getting the i5 7600k. I recently got an ultrawide monitor and new GPU (GTX1080) and due to the high resolution (3440x1440) I still can't get Ultra settings on games so was considering upgrading. I am not sure however how much of a difference the new CPU will do as my current one is O/C to 4.6 Ghz. I am really wondering if going from an i5 4690k to an i5 7600k will endup making much difference with that monitor for gaming.

According to this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html
the two CPUs are in the same tier, gaming-wise, so not much difference for that monitor, However, that monitor will allow the 1080 to shine.

But honestly the thing that'll hold you back the most at this resolution is the GPU. If you want to save some money but improve performance anyway, maybe seek out an i7 4770k/4790k. Either one will work in your current system, and it'll help out in games that max out i5s without costing an arm and a leg.

In the end though, the biggest obstacle for your resolution is the GPU power required. I stepped down from 4k@60Hz to 3440x1440@100Hz mostly because I got a good deal on this Acer X34, but I already had the GPU power to push it (SLI Titan X). You actually need an almost identical amount of GPU power for ultrawide 100Hz as you would for 4k 60Hz (~495MPixels vs ~497MPixels). Since a single GTX 1080 isn't enough for 4k60 on ultra settings, it also isn't enough for 100Hz ultrawide. You'll have to either live with lowering settings, or move up to either SLI 1080s or a highly overclocked GTX 1080Ti.
