i7 7700 or i7 7700k with GTX 1080 ti

Solution
If you want to play at 144 Hz, you definitely need high clock speed, so get the 7700K, and set it at least to 4.8 GHz, if not 5 GHz. It'll help use the 1080 Ti fully at 1440p, and if you get the 7700 it might bottleneck in some games here and there. So get the 7700K with a good liquid or air cooler, and do overclock it - you'll need it for the high refresh rate.

then you have to think if that extra couple bucks for the K version will be worth it. without overclocking the K verion only offers a small increase in clockspeed over the non K version. if you are not going to overclock you can save money by going with a motherboard with a non Z series chipset as well

Naa, Noctua NH-D15 and similar still do the trick.

With one selection, you reserve the ability to make that choice anytime over the next 3-4 years ... with the other, the choice is made for you.

Seems worthwhile to keep that choice available for an investment of $20

If you are talking about a CLC ty6pe all in one water cooling type system, why ? Do you want your CPU to run hotter .... or be 12 times as loud. ?

There is no 1 x 120 or 2 x 120mm CLC cooling system that can compete in cooling / noise with a much cheaper air cooler.

These coolers will outperform the big CLCs every time:

Noctua NH-D15 ($90)
Cryorig R1 Ultimate ($90)
Phanteks PH-TC14-PE ($65)
Scyther Mugen Max ($36)

Even the $25 Hyper 212 will outperform the single fan CLCs like the H55

As for gaming at 1440p, the best gaming experience is available on the AU Optronics 144/165 Hz IPS panels. The Asus PG279Q comes in at $750 and delivers 8 bit color / the Acer XB271HU delivers 10 bit color for $700. Below that price point I should not choose an IPS panel. TN units run $500 - $625

To drive it, you will need at least a 1070. Using Witcher 3 for example:

1070 which will for example deliver 65 fps ... 73 ish overclocked
1080 which will for example deliver 80 fps ... 87 ish overclocked
1080 Ti which will for example deliver 109 fps ... 116 ish overclocked

Thanks for the recommendation

no it more then a 20.00 choice man. if you get the K version you have to fork out more cash for a Zseries motherboard as i have mentioned previously. and sure you can go get the right motherboard down the road but depending on when you want to make the plunge it may be hard to find one or get one at a decent price

No, you do not.
I7-7700K running at stock has a clock of 4.2, importantly faster than a I7-7700 which runs at 3.6 stock.
To me, that difference is big even if you do not overclock.
To OC, you will need a Z270 based motherboard and a aftermarket cooler.
If you do overclock,
As of 6/9/17
What percent can get an overclock at a somewhat sane 1.4v Vcore.

I7-7700K
4.9 83%
5.0 62%
5.1 29%
5.2 6%
On cooling, an air cooler will be quieter, less expensive, more reliable, and will do the job.
Noctua has some of the best coolers, and they are certified for various levels of TDP in processors.
I7-7790K is a 91w processor.
If you look at this chart, the NH-u12s will be fine with a modest overclock, and the NH-U14s or NH-D15s will handle a maximum overclock.

only if you don't consider all the factors .... if you are building a 1440p gaming box, you are making a substantial investment. Do you really want to have that system curtailed by a substandard sound system ? The entry point for a Z series motherboard w/ a decent sound system (ALC 1220) is $130.

At H270 ....
$87 gets you ALC887
$99 gets you ALC887
$110 gets you ALC887
$120 gets you ALC 892
$130 gets you ALC 1220 .... same as the Z 170 series MoBo. In short, if you are buying "apples to apples".

If you want a gamng system with a decent sound system, the Z series is free. So no, you do not have to fork out extra money for Z series, not if you are buying a gaming motherboard with the features desired for a gaming system. A few other somethings you get for free .... the ability to add a 2nd GFX card and extra PCI-E storage slot, 2 more USB 3 ports and Intel Smart Response Technology
