Dear forum, I suspect that my current graphic card PNY GTX 550 Ti 1GB PCI Express 2.0 died and cause my computer to crash when trying to play WoT game only a around few seconds into the game. I notice that my game fps becomes really slow and then computer crashes.
So I am looking for a high end gaming graphic card under $600 to replace my graphic card and increase my game display setting which was at medium that my computer system can support.
I read that pcie 3.0 is backward compatible with my mother board pcie 2.0X16 slots.
My computer system info is as follows:
Windows 10 pro 64 bit
CPU: intel i7 860 at 2.8 GHz
Ram: 8 GB DDR3 - 1333 DIMM
Mother board: ASUS P7P55D EVO LGA1156 socket
Expansion slots: 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (single at x16 or dual at x8/x8 mode)
Power supply: Antec EarthWatts Series EA-750 Green 750W ATX12V
Hard Drive: C: 1TB, D:2TB
Monitor: ASUS VS278Q, 27 inch, 1 msec response time. 2 x HDMI, 1 VGA/D-Sub, 1 DisplayPort
Computer setting for display resolution: 1920 x 1080

I would like to get a powerful graphic card now and I don't have to upgrade my graphic card when I need to upgrade my mother board and cpu in the future. I have been looking at graphic cards
GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 but I don't know if my computer system can handle them regarding CPU and pice 2.0 x 16 slot.

I would appreciate help for graphic card recommendation.

Thanks!

Your PSU can handle those cards, but they will be slightly bottlenecked by the aging 1st gen Core CPU. You really don't need to spend $600 to play WoT at max settings @ 1080p. The GTX 1060 3GB or 6GB card will do that easily. But if the new card is for a future system upgrade, then the GTX 1070/80 will be fine.

But the shut-down while playing the game and the sudden drop in performance suggests other issues. Possible power supply decay. Does the problem only occur when the system is heavily loaded like gaming?

Hi Grandmaster, thanks very much for your answer. My computer crash problem only happen when the I am playing the WoT game. I have no problem with any other activities, computer display, watching you tube, or watching soccer game online. I don't play any other game beside WoT. My power supply is about 6 year old.

Maybe the crash issue is separate from the shut down issue. Try a couple software fixes.
1) Run CCleaner and do the Clean and Registry portions both. Reboot.
2) Uninstall the gfx driver by running DDU from safe mode. It will clean up all the extraneous files that normally get left behind as well as registry entries. Reboot and install the latest driver for your card. You can do this when you get the new card too for best results.
3) If you think you might have some poorly written malware interfering with the system, give Malwarebytes a run.

Hi clutchc, I followed all 3 steps of your advices. Played WoT and the computer crashed with a blue screen similar to what happened before. I am getting a new graphic card and will see if it will fix the problem.

OK. Well, you helped your PC anyway. But now that it appears the problem may be hardware, Why not try another test. Many times BSODs are caused by a failing stick of memory. Run Memtest on each stick individually for at least one full pass. If any errors at all show up after that run, the stick needs replacing.

With that CPU and RAM, going with a 1060 or 1070 probably isn't worth the extra money. A GTX1050ti would probably be more effective. Now if you are going to upgrade your MB and CPU later, then for a few bucks more go ahead and get the better cards, that way you will be ready when you do the other upgrade, but for right now, your CPU is definitely going to be a weak link that is going to hamper your GPU performance.

Dear forum, my problem is solved. I installed a used EVGA GTX 670 2GB graphic card into my computer and I don't have the game crashing problem when playing WoT. I was able to get more fps and better graphic settings with this card than my old GTX550 Ti. I am glad that the problem was with the graphic card and not something else like memory problem. I did try to run the memtest86 to test my memory but I could not get the computer to run from the flash drive memtest86 image. I did set the boot sequence to start with removable device.
Thanks to clutch and Bo Lee for helping.
