Hello folks,

I have a laptop which I will be away from for about ten months. The last time I left it for that long the battery died and I had to replace it. What can I tell a family member to do to make sure it doesn't die out? Would having someone plug in the laptop to charge the battery once every month be OK to keep it going? Or should it be every two weeks? Every week?

Thank you for your help.

Chances are the discharge will be slower if the battery is out of the laptop.

Every notebook is different. My old one could go well over a month without being dead(now age has killed it. These things can only take so many charge/discharge cycles.).

Having a family member top it off every month to month to month and a half should be good.

If they can start it and check the charge levels from time to time(maybe weekly), they may be able to adjust the charging schedule(in case it goes faster or slower). Do not leave it sleeping as this will drain it faster(hibernate should use as little power as OFF).

Ok thank you for that nukemaster.

Lithium Ion batteries shouldn't be at full charge when being stored for a length of time.

Taking the battery out of the laptop when it's at 40% charge and placing the battery in the refrigerator (not the freezer) until you get back is better for battery longevity than frequent charging and discharging cycles.
