Have I lost my data?

Hi,

I had 2 old HDD drives I wanted to check out. I bought a cradle to allow me to put them on my laptop. Once I got the first drive loaded up and checked through it (didn't think to back it up here) I then unplugged and loaded the 2nd on. Then once I was done with that I changed drives again and the 1st drive came up saying error, device is corrupted or damaged. I had a look online and did some research and was suggested to open command prompt and did chkdsk f and r. This seemed to help, but then denied me access. After fixing that it seems I have only got 3GB data instead of the 40GB originally.

Have I lost the data completely or can it still be recovered?

Thanks
James

The first step is to understand what may have happened.

The second step is to realize that anything you do may cause more loss or make existing losses unrecoverable.

My suggestion is to run the applicable manufacturer's diagnostics on the drives involved.

Remember that that there may have been some bug or defect in the cradle you used. Or the software involved.

Proceed carefully and look for more information with respect to the corruption or damage error messages.

Look into the details: OS, software being used, formatting, etc...
