I've got an old Alienware desktop AREA-51 i7 CPU @ 3.47GHz 12.0GB RAM. It has an AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series that I would like to upgrade to a new Radeon with more RAM... What would you recommend to replace this card with?

My suggestion is to you upgrade it to something between the GTX1050-1070.
Doing that your CPU would probably bottleneck your new GPU on games that are CPU intensive and requires multiple cores, but you'll would get a very good performance on games like CoD, tha for a recent game it don't push the CPU too much.
On games like BF1 or GTA V, you'd be able to play them, but in low graphics and 40FPS avarage(I got a similar CPU so I can tell you that by personal experience).

I think you should buy the 1050 or 1070 because you'll need to change this build soon, it's very outdated and there's no space for overclocking or upgrading the CPU without changing the MoBo. So with any of the GTX 1000 series you'd be able to play some recent games...
