well the title says it all... will it?
it seems like a no brainer yes but will i get at least 70% of the performance of two of them?

Solution

There is no CPU that won't be the limiting factor for two 1080ti GPUs at 1080p. If you are running 1080p then you have wasted A LOT of money on GPUs that are not being utilized.

You don't answer the resolution question. Many games may not even use one of the graphic cards because they don't support SLI or there isn't an SLI profile for them.

There is no generic answer, IMO.

From the benchmarks I've run, i7 4770k and i7 7700k performance the same with 1080TI SLI, IF you have 2400 DDR3. Otherwise it can be upwards of 10fps lower than a newer platform.

Before anyone ask, Yes I have both setups and two 1080Tis. Actually I have 3..

Have a look here; pretty good comment on it http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3276861/core-7700k-bottleneck-gtx-1080-sli.html

I have 1080Ti SLI, coming from 980Ti SLI, 780Ti SLI, 390X CF, 290X CF before and I would not recommend 1080Ti SLI for anything less than 1440p 144Hz, 4K 60Hz, or something like 7680x1440p surround. SLI is not something you can count on a lot of the time and often introduces additional issues even when it works; for example it "works" in wildlands; however there is absolutely no setting I can disable that will make the resulting shimmering/flickering of ground textures stop. So instead of playing it on my 7680x1440p surround; I play it on my 1080p TV with my old i7 960 and a 980Ti, because it's much more pleasant and I'm not a fan of disabling/re-enabling surround over and over. I'd recommend you take a hard look on why SLI would be worth it to you; step one would be in one of those categories I mentioned, step two look at the games you play and see how well supported they are by SLI. A single 1080Ti is more than enough for 1080p/1440p 60Hz and more for some games. l

If your an image-ophile I could argue you can use that much horse power in a handful of games. But we are talking ultra settings with filtering and AA set manually at 16x by 16x. Now it is way expensive and completely not worth it for 99% of folks but thre are a few who like all the eye candy through the roof. And the CPU won't bottleneck it because the GPU will be worked hard enough. I am one of those image-ophiles who can stand jaggies and still require the highest settings available but I can live with 16x by 8x filtering ...even 16x by 4x if I HAVE to. But I game at 4K most of the time (do have a 1080p rig). Point being There is a population of gamers who could use that gear at 1080P but they are very very few. That set-up is more geared towards 4K or 1440P 144hz.

Yeah technically he has a Devils Canyon CPU, but its a refresh of the Haswell i7-4770K with 100mhz higher clock speed. Really if I OCed the 4770K a 100Mhz, it would preform the same.

Same goes for the Skylake and Kaby Lake, they are Plus / Minus 5% within each other.

With a 4970K, since it only has 16PCIE lanes total the cards are split 8x / 8x. Not a problem unless you are playing at 4K as these cards will eat slightly more bandwidth than the 8X can provide. That being said even one card is overkill for 1080P in ANY game. 2 are for 2K and 4K gaming minimum. Unless you like just wasting money.

i don't see it as wasted money as in the long run lets say in 2020-2025 games will be hard to run at 1080p even on a gtx 1080 ti.

People said the same thing about every generation of cards. They buy 2 high end cards thinking it will last forever. Seen anyone running GTX 580 SLI lately? no because a single 1050 Ti preforms better. $1,400 for a pair versus getting a $300 card every other year that preforms better. Complete waste of money unless you are going for cutting edge. Buying it because you want to play on ultra settings in 2025 is not going to happen. At most the top tier cards last at most 3 years before medium settings is the best they can do.
