Dilemma: i7 7700k v i7-6800k

- My parents bought me an i7-6800k for Christmas
- I have an incompatible motherboard, a new one would cost $300-500
- Should I try to sell the new 6800k in exchange for a 7700k + New Motherboard ($100) or keep the 6800k and buy a new expensive motherboard?

Current Specs:
Nvidia 1070
Asrock Z77 Extreme6
i7-3770

The dilemma is that I'd feel a little guilty selling the cpu for less than what it was worth when they bought me it but it's practically new so perhaps I could get a good price for it, but it's not worth spending an extra $400 for a motherboard to avoid guilt.

Also, which motherboard set is better for further upgrades when cpu's get even better.
Finally, I mainly use the pc for gaming/streaming.

It may be beneficial to note that I chose to upgrade the cpu because when I was streaming with obs open on my second monitor, my ingame fps would be low and my obs would say "HIGH CPU USAGE"

An i7-7700k is better for gaming, however, if you are mostly streaming, the i7-6800k will be the better choice. As far as upgrade paths, the x99 motherboards support more RAM, Quad-Channel configuration, and further CPU upgrades, whereas the i7-7700k is the best CPU for the z270 motherboard. I would recommend keeping the i7-6800k. The reason I recommend this is because you already own it, it is technically a better CPU, and you will need to get a CPU and motherboard anyway.
The 7700K/Z270 would be faster in gaming, unless you plan on lot's of Twitch/Livestream action while gaming and decoding/rendering...then I'd lean towards the X99 board...

THere are some 'not overly expensive' X99 boards, but most start at $250, and go north pretty quickly...

6900k vs 7820x vs R7 1700.

You may find this interesting. Especially considering what having 2 more cores and 4 more threads would do for you in the future, running multithreaded games while streaming.
And having an upgrade path in the future involving the same socket. And the same mobo. With the same OS.

AsRock has stated that Coffeelake /8700k will NOT drop in to a Z270 mobo either.
In case some wanted to go 7700k to 8700k........
