I was wonder if I created a bootable usb version of windows 8.1 and ran/installed it from there, does that mean that it will delete my main hard drive? I am looking to dual boot. I want to keep my windows 7 on my main drive and go to windows 8.1 as needed via bootable usb. It's my first time so please help. When I install the windows version from the bootable usb, will it install on the USB or my real hard drive causing me to lose my main hardrive?

Solution
8.1 will not install on a USB drive. (It can install FROM a usb drive, but it cannot run from the usb drive.) This is different than Linux where you can run from the USB drive.

If you boot an 8.1 install disk or USB drive it will ask permission then wipe out the win7 image. You need to set up dual boot: https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2425419,00.asp

OR get a second hard drive and have 8.1 install there instead of on your current disk. Given a 100GB SSD is $40 refurbished from newegg that is what I'd do.
