There should be a dropdown box to select the number of threads right on the main screen. Maybe you have an older version that doesn't have that? I believe this should be the most recent version...
Make sure you set it to your processor's number of threads, not just its number of cores. If you have a 4 core, 8 thread processor for example, and it only runs 4 threads, your load will appear to be around 50%.

I do have an 8 thread processor. How do I set the processors number of threads? So is this normal for an 8 thread processor?
I've heard of it sometimes selecting the wrong number of threads, though I can't say how common that is. You can manually specify the number of threads though. You should be able to select 8 from the "Threads" dropdown box right below where it lists the available RAM, at least in the version I have (2.54).
