I currently have my old 850 evo connected to an external harddrive enclouse(usb 3.0) connected to my laptop. I want to secure erase it using samsung magician. However, when i open samsung magician, the ssd displays as a usb but has invalid s/n and does not display secure erase tab. Is there a step I am missing or something I should do differently? Thanks! ALSO, is there another software I should be using in my case? i only have a laptop(win7) at the moment. The SSD was previously main drive with windows. I already erased windows.old. Would I be good just formatting the drive? i am trying to sell it, so i dont want to have data stored.

TLDR;i need to wipe an ssd. if i need ssd to be connected via SATA, is there a way i could wipe the ssd via USB? I currently do not have a PC only a laptop. Thanks!

Deleting the files and giving garbage collection an hour or two to zero those blocks will accomplish nearly the same.

I would encrypt the drive, then format it and give GC time to run personally.
The residual data will be scrambled and nearly impossible to recover unless maybe the NSA can. LoL

A run of recovery software should tell you there's nothing to recover after that.
