Hello there

A bit of a novice when it comes to upgrading.
My current build is:

i5- 4590 3.30 GHz
6gb ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4gb
Running Windows 10 if that matters

Mostly just play Overwatch and do digital art.

Sometimes these tasks make my cpu really hot and run really hard.

Solution

It is not that easy — changing the Motherboard will (mostly) change everything alongside. Other than the Motherboard, you will need to change CPU, RAM, (maybe) PSU, Case, and cables. If you have the budget for such a jump, then go ahead.
Well... Go for an i5 6600k - 7600k or an i7 7700k
But do be prepared to hit high temps if you dont wanna delid the cpu (thx intel for the pigeon poop)

Or go Ryzen 5 1600X or Ryzen 7 1700X

For RAM I would go for a 16GB to 32GB RAM

Nvidia 1060 6GB

Sidenote: If your CPU run really hot then there is something wrong with the cooling in your case / cpu cooler.

It only supports 4th/5th Intel Core Generations, which is costly and wouldn't worth the upgrade.
That's right there your problem. You should get an after-market cooling system, as stock coolers usually just suck. Something like Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO would be extremely good.

In my opinion, it would be either Asus Maximus IX Hero, or Asus Strix Z270.

Unless you are going to overclock/SLI, EVGA 650W would be more than sufficient (your rig won't pass 400W, anyway).

1080Ti + i7 will warrant a 650w psu for headroom and stuffs
