So with all the hype of Threadripper, Vega and Intel's overpriced i9s, I've been debating building a new PC. Right now I'm rocking a 4790k OC to 4.8ghz, 16gb of corsair vengeance drr3 2400mhz, a gtx 970 and a gigabyte z170x gaming 7 mobo. I plan on turning my old system into a media server/HTPC. So, should i wait another generation? Or should i jump on the hype train and max out my credit card?

Lol I agree with you completely, but I'm an enthusiast and seeing all this new tech is killing me. plus i want a 4k capable htpc, and my components are aging after being pushed to the limit for the last few years. but I think your right. Patience is a virtue.

TOTAL WASTE of your money to upgrade anything except for the graphics card.

Replacing the CPU/mobo/Windows/DDR memory gets you what? Similar to WORSE performance in many games?

I'd suggest a GTX1080 or GTX1080Ti but I think it's worth waiting for reviews on VEGA 56 and 64 (and real pricing not MSRP). For example, something like a VEGA 56 Asus Strix for perhaps $450USD might be a really great card.

Upgrading to a GSYNC (NVidia GPU) or Freesync (AMD GPU) may also make sense if you don't have a great monitor.
