I'm getting a new PC soon, and I want to take the hard drive from the old PC and put it in my new one, will I still have windows and all my files on it?

Solution

This would make the most sense.

Your files and everything will be there, however windows may or may not boot. You may end up getting a blue screen because the windows you have installed has all of the drivers and everything for its current PC, and with all new hardware it may just crash. But I have seen it work in some cases. It is typically always recommended that you have a fresh installation of windows in a new build.

So if it doesn't boot I need to buy a new copy of windows?

With Windows 10 the license is tied to your Microsoft account (login ID) and you "should" be able to reinstall Window on your new computer and activate the license. If your old PC was a pre-built with Windows already installed (OEM) then I don't think you could reinstall Windows on the new pc for free, as the OEM license is tied to the old pc's motherboard.

I wanted to put the old hard drive into the new PC and buy a new hard drive for the old one, but now I'm thinking that it would be easier to leave the old hard drive in the old pc and buy a brand new one for the new pc along with windows and install everything on there?
