Ryzen 1600x - Safe OC temps!?

Hi all,

Regular poster and avid follower.

Having recently had a custom build PC, specs in my sig, I wanted to try a little OC to see what my new Ryzen is like.

I've a Wraith max cooler and I'm just wondering how much I can push the 1600x temp wise. I've had it at a very conservative (at least by all accounts) 3.85 ghz overclock for all cores. Attached is a pic of Coretemp, CPUID and AMD Ryzen Master, with Prime 95, small FFT's running http://imgur.com/DXrR00H OC attempt was straight forward, just bumped the speed to 3.85, no voltage increase, everything else on auto, and no changes in bios. Software OC using Ryzen Master.

Any input is appreciated.

edit: i haven't played around with fan curves yet. Just trying to establish safe OC settings at a base point. Will play with other settings/fans/Oc mem once I've got something stable on the CPU

Most people OC to 3.9 safely after that temps got high and pc become unstable... you have lower ambient temps you can go further.
Depending upon silicon lottery you may or may not hit 4.0. no problem in trying.
BTW my personal opinion : Don't overclock if you don't need to .
if i am not hitting stock freqencies what i would do with OC ??
 
Prime95 runs far hotter than any real-world application even when using nearly 100% of the CPU.

I would base maximum core temperature to tweak fan profiles based on running HANDBRAKE while it's close to 100% (Task Manager) for at least 10 minutes.

Max safe temp?
I'm having a difficult time with this for example there's THIS:

My advice frankly is to get a different cooler as all the articles I've seen recommend only overclocking Ryzen if you get better than a stock cooler.

I don't know how some of these coolers are "AM4 compatible" since they came before Ryzen so I'd double-check on that. I just clicked "AM4" in pcpartpicker to filter them down and this looks like a good value for a cooler.

So...
my advice would go that way unless you're happy with the noise and overclock (though you might not get above 4GHz anyway).

Temperature again... so again confused though since overclocks seem to be PROBLEMATIC to hit 4GHz with stock coolers it feels like you're on the verge of the temperatures being a bit high so again better cooler or just stock settings.

A small overclock appears to change the temperature a LOT.
 
@ somesh101 - Yeah, i just wanted to see what it might push to. I'm not an extreme OC'er or anything, and mostly have my systems running at stock, as they are plenty powerfull for what I want them to do.

@photonboy - Thanks for the advice. The cooler isn't stock per se. It's the one that would normally come with the 1700x/1800x and is a 140w rated cooler, with the 1600x being a 95w CPU. I thought there would be a lot of headroom. The Wraith Max barely spins up to be honest, even just at the moderate OC. My temps at idle are about low 30's, gaming at around 45-55 (game dependant) and at full load maxed with prime95 are: @stock - 3.7 all core temps are at 77c max. @ 3.85 all core temps at 80c on the button. As i said keep in mind, I've not changed any fan settings yet.

yeah, i guess thats what I want to achieve, at the moment, it's 150mhz + very mild OC. I want to find out if I increase the fan curve, and with the temps as I've outlined, give me much room to get more of an OC. Most Ryzen 5/7's max out about 4/4.1, so at 3.85 and temps as they are, should I eek out another bump to 3.9 or more. And if so, at what temp I should begin to dial back for safe 24/7 use.

I have a Ryzen 1600 with a MSI bazooka b350 board and 16 gb of sk hynix 3000mhz teamgroup ram. How I overclocked was rather simple but please update the bios to the newest available first.

I set the core voltage at 1.325v and the frequency at 3.825ghz. At 3.9ghz, it required a huge jump in voltage. 4GHz required 1.41v. I decided to leave it at 3.825GHz. It's the best balance IMO. As far as cooling is concerned, I use a phanteks dual tower cpu cooler, my temps never pass 62c, even after running prime95 for 2 hours. With a stock cooler, I suspect a temp around 75-80c which would make me OCD but I'm sure is 100% fine. I do suggest playing around with the Ryzen master utility before hand. leave the voltage at auto in the bios, if you don't, it'll lock to whatever you set it to regardless of what you set in the Ryzen master utility.

yeah, the offset thingy on temps is really throwing me off. According to that article, My temps are idling at low 20's maybe. Which I can't quite believe. I do have two 120mm front intake fans, and a rear 120 fan going out of the case. So maybe it's possible because the exhaust heat from the rear of pc seems okay. I've had much hotter with a Q6600. But, still I can't quite believe the offset.

What program do you use? I find the best program is CPUID Hardware monitor. It's also supposed to take into account the offset and fix it. Package temp is the cpu temp and CPUTIN is the socket temp. Also my Ryzen 1600 idles at 34c no matter how cool it actually is. I don't believe the idle temps are the most accurate thing in the world.
 


Thanks for that. Wow, that's some leap in juice to get to 4ghz from 1.325, to 1.41! I set the core at 1.375 and managed to get to 3,85 without a further bump. That's why i'm wondering, with just a short bump could i hit 3.9 or 4 ghz at a relatively low voltage. I suppose, I have to try and see. It won't kill it haha :) Right, I'm gonna up the fan curve, set my core at my VID 1.375, and see where it takes me. Try get 4ghz on this B350 :)

Haha nah man you shouldn't kill anything. Yes, it's a huge jump. I'm saving that for a few years down the road when I actually need that frequency jump. Every cpu has that middle ground of best frequency without cranked up voltage. With Ryzen, it seems to be around 3.8-3.85ghz.
 


i was just checking CPU HWmonitor V AMD Ryzen master, and there is some disparity. HW Mon is showing 57c! Yet Ryzen Master, Core temp are showing roughly the same at about 35c which is higher than normal idle temps, which i put down to high ambient temps here tonight.
 


:) okay, think i'm in around that ballpark, with no errors on Prime for a good two hours now.

Yep, once you're sure it's stable. Just set it in the bios, adjust fan speeds and you should be good to go. My boyfriend has the same build as me but he uses the stock wraith cooler, I set it up to run max fan speed once the cpu hits 60c. The stock AMD cooler is actually really quiet as far as stock coolers go too. Once you're sure it's stable, run a game like battlefield 1 or Rainbow 6 seige. Those games use all the cores they can in my experience. That way, you get an idea of how much heat your system pumps out while using both the GPU and CPU. After everything is set and done, you don't have to think about any of it.
 
GAMERS NEXUS recommends using CPUID's HW Monitor for temperature over even AMD's own software.

They appear to have the most accurate results, and if there is an offset they compensate for it (assuming your version of HW Monitor is new enough).

It's also possible AMD's software is good now, but judging from an above comment it doesn't seem true (if it's the latest version of Ryzen Master).

In general I think manually editing the UEFI (BIOS) is the way to go. Most software solutions err on the side of caution thus the voltage may be too high which raises the temperature and can limit the overclocking potential.

*final point, is don't push things too close to the limit of instability. For one thing you don't even KNOW if it's still stable just because you see no BSOD crashes or other immediate indications. For Intel my rule was 200MHz minimum (i.e. crashes at 4.6GHz drop to 4.4GHz, then drop the voltage until it crashes and raise it by sufficient offset to ensure stability but not running chip too hot)

well I have a Ryzen 5 1600x running at a max of 66c on load [Bios fan setting is max but is extremely quiet] for 40 minutes and on normal loads i am around 55c and then on idle its 39c i have the a stock cooler that my cousin gave to me, since he has the ryzen 5 1500x and the r5 1600x does not come with a cooler and I have 2 intake fans that are 120mm and 1 100 mm fan for intake then for outtake, I have 2 120mm fans one on the top and back and 1 100m on the top, I don't know why I have 2 100 mm fans but, I do and why not, I also have a small 40 mm fan for my 2 HDD and 2 SSD cause they get too hot at 100c I dont know if that bad but, I personally don't like it and BTW update your bios before OC as there could be new settings like, I had to update my bios because in task manger the speed for the OC went up and down so i updated and I could disable a setting called "cool and quiet' which makes the cpu clock speed go down and up when not at full load I am also writing this at my CPU at full load with cupid CPU-Z and is satble for 1 hour at 66c and The max temp for a ryzen cpu is 95c and for longevity
70 and 80c is optimal for longevity and I keep mine below
