Hello, I recently completed my first build for a gaming PC and found it to be quite the learning experience. I had fun and felt prepared for most of the build except for the fan setup and configuration. I started to notice a problem when I saw my GPU consistently reach its throttling temp of 83°C. I've made some adjustments and would like some verification on if I have optimally set up my fans or how I could improve them.
Specs
Case: NZXT H440
CPU: Intel 7700k
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1080 (Native)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z270E Gaming Motherboard
CPU Cooler: Corsair H150 Closed Loop Liquid Cooler
I have 3 intake fans on the front of my case and 1 exhaust fan on the back (these are the fans that came with the case). And I have my two rad fans pushing air through the rad and out through the top of my case (these are the fans that came with the Corsair H150).
Now at this point I don't think that I am doing anything wrong (please correct me if I am though). However, I had a very hard time understanding the headers on my motherboard and how I should connect everything. Prior to my set up I didn't even know that the fan headers were different. Things were further complicated with the inclusion of the fan hub at the back of my case.
The NZXT H440 has a fan hub with 8 3-pin headers, a molex power cable, and a 4-pin PWM cable that connects to the motherboard. The 4 fans that came with the case were already plugged into this. At first I thought "oh this is convenient, I can just plug every one of my fans into this hub including my rad fans!" I didn't even notice the PWM cable at this point, and all of my fans wound up running at 100%. I read that the fan hub would do this if the PWM cable wasn't plugged into the mobo. So at this point I ended with this configuration:
Corsair cooling block cable -> AIO_PUMP
Rad fans -> Y-header -> CPU_FAN
Fan Hub PWM Cable -> CPU_OPT
I stayed with this configuration for about a week and began to notice the GPU temp peaking at 83°C which is when I began thinking about it. It became clear to me that because my Fan Hub was plugged into the CPU_OPT header, it was regulating the case fans based on the CPU, which was nice and cool thanks to the liquid cooler, while everything was on fire (relatively speaking). So I just switched the Fan Hub PWM Cable to the CHA_FAN1 header, thinking that this will regulate the fan speeds based on the temp in the case.
I feel like this makes sense, but because I'm not very familiar with fan headers or temperature control I wanted to get some of your opinions. I haven't had a chance to test this out yet, but I will be monitoring it.
TL;DR I'm a noob. I have my water block going to AIO_PUMP, my rad fans going to CPU_FAN, and my fan hub with 4 case fans connected going to CHA_FAN1. Does this make sense?
