own a Seagate 1TB backup plus portable drive.
Suddenly it went dark after rebooting my laptop and since then not visible under my computer.
so tried various software level remedies and other observations, as follows:

1) Under disk management, is labeled as "Disk 1 unknown not initialized". So when tried to initialize in MBR mode, gives an error - "The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error"

2) Under CMD(in adminitrative mode), chkdk f: , shows this "cannot open volume for"

3) Its not making any click sound when plugged in. And led on top light up. No other sound.

4) Devices and printer recognizes it fully and tried reinstalling drivers too. But under volume tab it shows 0 under each head.

So under these parameters what could be the problem?
It is still in warranty period but do not want to loose all data, so can give up warranty.
Running windows 7 and ubuntu.

Solution
If the data is critically important, send it out for recovery.
If you want to risk losing, it then you can try opening it up. Once the drive is out of the case, try it in a pc or other external enclosure and test it before you open the drive itself. Even if you get the drive working after opening it, replace it. Another usb drive is usually cheaper then an internal drive.
