Best setup for 128 ssd and x2 500 6gbps hdd

Hi guys, first time buliding custom pc for gaming so if i ask stupid questions then sorry in advance.
So here's my question i just bought 128 ssd (samsung) and have old two 500GB hdd 6gbps 7200rpm (Toshiba) so i want to know what is the best setup combo for them like :-

1. ssd + hdd raid (which raid ?)
2. just two hdd raid (which raid ?) and use it for games and storing files and install windows 10 on ssd
3. just install windows 10 on ssd and plug both hdd as normal drives without any raid.

I want to know what is the best option for performance and which raid and why ?

2nd question is that should i get a performance boost if i setup a 32gb ssd as two hdd cache ? if yes then how can i setup that ?

Asrock z87 extreme 4
Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1
x2 RipjawsX 2133mhz
x2 hdd 500GB 6gbps 7200rpm (Toshiba)
128 gb 6gbps (Samsung)
Evga 600b

2. No RAID for the HDDs
3. Yes...do that. OS and all applications on the SSD. Everything else (games, etc) on the HDD's.

Personally, you should have gotten a SSD larger than 128GB, but that will work, mostly.

4. 32GB SSD as a cache for the HDD'S? DO NOT DO THAT.

Really appreciate your reply. I only got 128 gb one really cheap with good health going for bigger means bigger budget T_T and wouldn't i get speed if i do raid on hdds only like raid 0 ?

For a regular consumer PC, RAID of any type is rarely the answer.

So you have your OS and applications on the SSD.
What ends up on the HDD will not really benefit from being in a RAID 0. Yes, it is 'faster'. But that speed brings major drawbacks. If either drive dies, or the RAID controller goes bad....all data across both drives is lost forever.

Given the OS and applications on the SSD, what ends up on the HDD(s) doesn't really need the speed to risk the fail potential.


RAID of any type should never be run without a good backup plan.
RAID 0, not without a doubly redundant backup plan.

oh thats risky that means my games and other stuff is gone if raid fails :ouch:. BTW out of 10 how many times does it's possible Raid failure and what are reasons for Raid failure except for HDD goes bad.

Either drive dies, or the RAID controller (software RAID controller?) dies....all data is lost.
There is no "x out of 10"....but let's just say it is actually more risky than not RAID 0. And for no real benefit.

No real benefits ? does this means Raid 0 won't give HDDs significant boost ?

It will give you a benchmark speed boost.
But the stuff that ends up on that RAID 0 array does not really benefit enough to cover the increased fail potential.

Games, for instance, might/maybe see a somewhat faster level load time. That's about it.
Movies/music? Your playlist does not go any faster if living on a RAID 0.

Finally...."first time buliding custom pc"...do lots and lots and lots of research before you go down that road.

Really appreciate your time sir. And yeah i am doing research on many things which reminds me if it isn't a problem i need your advice on processor too. I bought a 4590 a friend of mine told me that i should get a i7 equivalent Xeon processor for Z87 asrock extreme 4 because it will be cheaper that i7 alot and the reason he told e is that because i5 and i7 have integrated graphics it makes their price high since i am using a Gtx 1070 i should go for Xeon with higher speed and i7 equivalent. So is it a right choice to get Xeon ?

You already have the 4590?
It is fine. Without knowing your overall budget and what you already have, hard to recommend a specific path.

But don't worry about your friends recommendation about the Xeon. What you have is OK.

Yes i already have it but i can give it back it's not a big issue and my buget is around $900 and i have all the components with still $60 remaining so if getting a i7 equivalent xeon is good i can go for it.

If this is an all new build, and you can send everything back....I'd suggest starting over completely.
The CPU you have, while "OK", is a few generations old.
With a $1,000 budget, you can probably do better, with current gen parts. Either new Intel or AMD Ryzen.
