Hi Tom's Hardware,
Been reading Tom's hardware for years, never had to post until now though, could always find the perfect answer to my query. However having gone through a few posts on here I've found people people experiencing similar issues but I just wanted to get some opinions on my specific set up.
I've been using the following components without any problem at all;
Aerocool 500w PSU
STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5
2 X Ballistix 8gb ram
i5-2320
In an old Lenovo mobo.
I recently decided to upgrade my CPU and mobo to;
i7-3770 (non k)
Gigabyte z77p-d3
The build works absolutely fine until it hits a high load (gaming, usually while playing GTA online, even at medium graphics settings) at which point it completely shuts off, the power just goes dead but as soon as I power up it boots as normal. My temperatures are completely normal;
CPU 45-50 °C
GPU 55-60 °C
Mobo 35-45 °C
I've gone through the steps on a CPU calculator but I'm not 100% certain I've done it all right and it looks like I'm using probably 415 watts at full load, would a 500 watt psu at 85% efficiency be enough for that or would I need a higher margin for safety?
My theory is that the GPU I have has somekind of Overdrive mode and it's pulling too much power from the PSU under heavy load and that's causing a power cut from the PSU but I just wondered if anyone had experienced something similar or thought it might be another problem entirely?#
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
