I have recently switched from pc to mac. I have an NTFS formatted external hard drive that I would like to have access to from my mac for Carbonite backup and read and write. I understand that I cannot reformat the drive without losing data but can I format a new drive in EXfat, move the data from the NTFS drive to the new drive and have full read and write access to the data in the new drive now formatted for MAC? Or am i just stupid?

Your Mac can read an ntfs drive which would allow you to copy that data off. Then you can format the drive as exfat and write it back.
Mac can also write to ntfs drives but the feature is off by default so I assume its buggy.
Other wise, yes you can copy the data to a new exfat drive as well

Lastly, please keep in mind that a backup copy of your data is never your only copy of it. its a second copy stored on a completely different device. One that preferably be completely disconnected, even from power, so that in the even of a massive surge you still have your precious data.
