Hello everyone,

So i am going to buy a HP Z400 workstation and it is equipped with Intel Xeon W3680 @stock clock. And i am considering to overclock it a bit ( maybe to 4 Ghz ).. But the mobo i am getting is HP's own i.e Branded.(which i know can not e overclocked). But since the multiplier of CPU mentioned above is unlocked, will i be able to overclock it using just multiplier using intel utility?

I am getting it for 130$, is this PC okay in terms of pricing, the package includes 6GB ddr3 memory and everything but a hard drive..

PS, i can also get a AMD phenom ii x6 1090t at 100$, So do you guys think going with intel system worth the price difference??

Any advice is highly appreciated
Thanks.

Try Throttlestop 8.xx software. It controls Voltage, and multiplier on unlocked CPUs.
Bsically you're getting a free computer with the CPU.
IDK about AMD.
As far as GPUs go I would look at Userbenchmark.com and see what people are running there in your system. IDK about HP but Dells have a big problem with newer Radeons

the Throttlestop software will work even on HP board??

I have enough trouble figuring out Dells. But Dell Dimension E520 QX6800 @4GHz. Dell Precision T3400 QX9650@ 4.15 GHz. The T3500 W3690 is next on the list to be tested. All Throtttlestop OC. if you have the computer you can try the software for free at TechPowerUp. TS is actually laptop underclocking software but iwth unlocked CPUs the settings can go up also.

I am late to the party but I will answer anyway because it may help others.

I have an HP Z400 with W3680. With ThrottleStop I can control the multipliers and set them where I want. Of course, I cannot adjust the vcore so there are limits as to how far I can go. I can run at 31x across all cores for 4133MHz. If I try to run at 32x the system shuts down during simple stress tests (CPU-Z stress test will cause a restart). It does not blue screen, it simply black screens and restarts, which leads me to believe the weak 475w PSU is problem.

With the stock heatsink the CPU temps get up to about mid 70s when stress tested. It idles right below 40 most of the time.
The Z400 came with 2x 4GB DDR3-1600 ECC RAM. I have a bunch of Non-ECC 4GB matched sticks so loaded it up with 6x 4GB for 24GB RAM. One other upgrade I will do is replace the stock PSU with a 500w Corsair unit. I have the ATX to HP PSU adapter on its way.

I have right at $200 in this system and I am pretty darn pleased with it. My main system is an i7-7700K at 5.0GHz. The Z400 is just a playtoy.

I think with those CPUs it's not called Vcore but they adjust current. The developer Unclewebb put some info on this at TechPowerUp.

I think it's called Turbo Power Limit and it self adjusts Voltage as long as your temperature is OK.
