I am looking at two UPS which are in a similar league, the:

CyberPower cp1500pfclcd https://www.cyberpowersystems.com/product/ups/cp1500pfclcd/

and

APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 1500 http://www.apc.com/shop/au/en/products/APC-Power-Saving-Back-UPS-Pro-1500-230V/P-BR1500GI

Edit: I found this thread that sort of answers my question: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2097498/ups-systems-surge-protectors-avr-system-protection.html?xtor=EREC-8889

So UPS don't do surge protection as particularly well as a dedicated surge protector... My research leads me to believe that you will want to have 1000+ joules of surge protection for computer systems. The CyberPower above has around 1000 joules whereas the more expensive APC only has 441 joules protection. Why are UPS surge protection not on par with dedicated surge protectors? If I was to plug one of the above UPS into a dedicated surge protector what sort might I be looking at? Obviously these UPS have around 10 power sockets for your gear so are there any high joule single socket surge protectors around?

maybe im going a bit off topic here, but most mostboards are protected now to 10 or high end even 15 KV with their own surge protectors.

buying a quality psu is 99.8% guranteed to withstand a lightningstrike surge , your components will remain unharmed 100%, the psu will die before your components will get destroyed, and you can send the psu free for repair or rma incase it happens(which i highly doubt).

jsut buy a ups incase your power drops out, thats really all.

UPS's and surge protectors, including power supplies, will NOT protect from a full on lightning strike.

UPS's however, help for a clean shutdown if your power goes out during said storm. It allows you to save and shut it off, then immediately unplug everything.

Surge protectors don't offer whats said above.

Another major difference is that UPS's regulate power if your power system is "bad".

Whenever there is a lightning storm, a very fierce one, make sure to properly turn off your units and components.

Hope I helped somewhat!

Motherboards since when? Z97 series? Power goes to the PSU before the motherboard so do PSU's have their own surge protection also? That doesn't stop other gear such as monitors, external drives, audio equipment etc from needing surge protection though does it?

@Vuragado what is bad power that the UPS can regulate? Voltage drops and things like that? Is this different to noise filtering that surge protectors also offer?

The question more is really how does or why does surge protection differ in an UPS compared to a dedicated surge protector?

The answer is that it doesn't offer any more difference than a regular surge protection other than having a battery backup for safe shutdowns.

If you're looking for complete lightning strike protection, then it wont do much as most lightning strikes can be up to 1,000,000 joules in rating.

For what it can regulate, is that it can regulate your pc's power when its on a bad power grid, and if the power grid is undervolting or overvolting, it will correct those issues.

This is very common of cyberpower ups's - I own one.

Is under/overvolting different to a surge and not something a surge protector is supposed correct? I am planning to get one of the above UPS.

The difference is that some dedicated surge protectors have higher joule ratings than the above mentioned UPS, so my question was are the joule ratings on these UPS good enough? I'm surprised the expensive 865W APC UPS only has 441 joules surge protection when APC itself recommends 1000+ joules for protecting sensitive electronics/data...
