Hi, I am currently using a rather old windows vista 32x OS, I am looking to install the 64x bit windows 7 version.

The current laptop is a Sony Vaio with 4gb of RAM, would the 64-bit run ok on this?

Solution

You will need to re-install Vista for 64 bit anyway. Yes you need to check for drivers for the system, and make sure your Vista disk has both 32 and 64 bit setups on it. If all you have is a restore disk from Sony it may only have what came with the computer.
There are many Sony Vaio laptop models. Look up your specific one on the Sony support site and see if there are Windows 7 drivers for it. If they are, it will run Windows 7. If there are not, it may still run it but you would need to do some searching to get everything working. In that case I don't suggest you change anything as you may never get things like audio and full video drivers working. If you are upgrading you may as well get Windows 10, it is current, cost is no different than a new copy of Win 7 would be. Driver check for that also applies

Thanks for the info! Well to be honest I dont even need the update to windows 7, I'm having a few issues running some new programs that need the 64-bit version of an OS for, so I'm sure Vista would still do the job, I just fancied a bit of an update ha.

Would I still need to go down the route of finding my Vaio model and drivers to work for it?
