Hello I've been real confused because I've settled on buying the i7 7700k and it's the gaming king but compared to a ryzen 7 1700 with 8 cores and 16 threads while the i7 has 4 cores and 16 threads, my questions are why does 7700k out preform the ryzen 7 and even though I am not fond of using future proof but how long would the i7 last me until games start using more cores and would it last more than a year or so?

I do apologize if my wording is a bit confusing or it's more simple than I think

Because it has better single thread performance, if you took 1 core from a 7700k and one core from a 1700 and compared them the 7700k core would outperform the 1700 core. I have no idea how long it will last, in my opinion I don't think the 1700 will ever outperform the 7700k in the majority of games. There are many games on the market today that can use 8 cores, cry engine games for example, but they still tend to perfom a bit better on the 7700k. I think we are still a ways off from seeing games that show a marked improvement on cpu's with more than 8 threads.

But that is just my opinion, I'm sure you will see many others on this topic.

The 7700k is a 4c/8t processor, not 4c/16t, compared to the 1700 which is 8c/16t.
That being said, the 7700k would still be a very capable processor for some time.The per core/per thread performance is simply higher on the 7700k (called IPC). I would not really recommend the 1700 if you strictly plan on gaming.
