Dropping screw onto graphics card ??

Hi All,

I realise this sounds stupid, yesterday i was attempting to install a sound card in my machine while it was standing up,as I thought it would be easy to slot it in, long story short, it wasn't and I dropped a thumb screw onto my graphics card, it does have a back plate and seems to be working fine, could such a thing ever cause damage ?, it was only from like half a inch. Im quite a paranoid person so just looking for some peace of mind.

Can it cause physical damage? generally not, unless it gets lodged in a fan.

Can it cause electrical damage? Yes, if the PC is on at the time.

PC was not on, im not even sure if the screw touched the gpu as its hard to see due to use of a support bracket. It runs perfectly fine and at 62 degrees at max load

As Jasonkaler said; If you merely dropped the screw onto the card - and PC was off at the time - you then picked the screw up again - your card will be perfectly fine, nothing to worry about

If the PC is on when a screw is dropped (never attempt any maintenance while pc is plugged in and / or switched on) the screw may cause a short on the MOBO or which ever component it lands on, and this will do damage to the system.

If, like i said, your pc was not on at the time, and you retrieved the screw, you will not notice anything amiss with your system as it will not have done any damage. If the pc had of been on at the time and it had of caused a short circuit, then you will have noticed some BSOD's at the very least.

Temps are looking good, and you have not caused any damage. It's all good.

If it had caused anything, it would be dead, or you would have major problems. Possibly some magic smoke would appear.

Thanks for the peace of mind, I've just spent 1.2k on my machine, I would rather not ruin it by me being stupid !

Thanks man, I will now that I finally have the audio power (Sound blaster Z) to match my graphics power !
