is it possible to run quad channel ram without using the suggested dimms? Ill offer some context of what im experienceing

I spent 2days trying to get a msi x99 gaming pro carbon based system to accept my fourth stick of ram, using compatability profiles for hynix ics all the way down the board . I couldn't get it to work based on the motherboards manual suggestion for ram configuration (ie use dimm slots 1,3,5 and 7) no matter what i did. But i tried something as a last ditch effort before rmaing the board. I used the 5th and the 6th dimm slot vs 5 and 7 like the manual suggested, it booted and ran great.
i then thought well its not running in quad channel mode, i check cpuz and sure enough somehow its running in quad channel. I vefrified it by Using super pi and saw an improvement that was somewhat noticable.
That shouldnt be possible based on my previous experince, but it works fine
2933 oc 17-15-15 with auto settings.
(Yes im suspecting the dimm slot is bad in 5 , but regardless its bizare and im fascinated to understand a bit more. )

QUAD CHANNEL should not work like that.

(before we get started it's D1-4 left-to-right, and D5-8 going right to left so D8 is to the right of D4)
The manual sucks because it doesn't specify if four stick only (in the proper configuration) is Dual or Quad but assuming it's Quad it is:

D1, D3, D7, D5
or all eight sticks

Obviously you likely know this, but I think it's being misreported in CPUID. Not sure why SuperPi would report higher though. Strange. Still, I highly doubt it's actually in Quad Channel.

*Try comparing your bandwidth now to:

a) D1 only (single channel), and
b) D1 and D3 (Dual Channel)

Now im back to not being able to get four sticks working again, but the speediness improved as i removed sticks?
It ran faster with 2 sticks and faster with only 1 stick?

Tbh I'm kinda content it aint working again, sanity is restored and ill just stick with tripple channel. Meh results seem stable now with what a single stick gave me in calculating 1mb 9.999s
Also one thing to the boards credit, it actually has it written on the board for which dimms to use first for quad channel, its eitheir the ram at this point or the board, leaning on the board though.
