Is buying a "used" hard drive worth the savings?

I'm thinking about building a NAS, and trying to save as much money as I can. Ran through ebay real quick to check the market and saw a bunch of used hard drives on sale. What's your opinion on those?

in no way is it worth the savings... its a huge waste of money, but if you dont care about losing all the data on the drive to each his own... I would advise buying a brand new drive straight from the store so you dont have to worry about it being dropped in shipping

It really depends. If you do regular backups, and are prepared for a HDD to fail at any moment, then it may be worth it. I've had drives that have been in service for over 10 years, and I have also had drives fail within days of being purchased new.

Even new drives can be dropped before(or after) getting to the store shelf, so the dropped hdd issue is a non issue.

The only question I would have is if there is any DOA warranty - so you a guaranteed to get a working drive.

the dropped drive is def an issues if ordering online had it happen several times wont ever go that route again... and the bottom line is a used drive is a used drive might as well get a new one from the beginning and save yourself the headache...

Is it more than $15 USD?
If so, probably not. Just buy new and have the manufacturer warranty.

For $15, I'd take the risk. Any more than that is not cheap enough to risk the early death possibility.

What size/make/model drives are we talking about?

They're 1 or 2 TB Drives for about 30-50 bucks depending on usage. Looks like they're WD 7200 blues. But really a new drive inst that much more expensive, so maybe your ball park in buying a drive is about where it should be at.
