I have an ASUS M5A78L-M + USB3 motherboard and the Rosewill Ranger-M case. The computer plays sound through the hdmi attached tv but that's it. I've been needing to use a microphone (I've tried like 8 headsets) and I just can't. All the ports pick up the device, and recognize a SMALL amount of sound coming from the headphone itself, but never through the microphone. Apparently it uses VIA drivers, which are supposedly all up to date. I searched online for drivers and used the CD that came with the MOBO but nothing happens when I try downloading any of the VIA drivers from the CD, and half of the drivers on the CD don't work as I get this error: WNT_6.2H_64. I am at my wits end with this ordeal and feel like I won't ever be able to use a microphone or any headphones with this computer.

You have set all your audio options to HDMI, that is the reason.
You did not mention your OS, so it will be generic.
1) Attach your headset first.
2) go to devices section where the connected headset is located and open your headset.
3) Then go to Sound and Audio settings for headset, like from properties etc.
4) there will be dropdown boxes next to input/output sources, clickon them and select options until you find the correct one. It may appearthat same name is displayed multipletimes, but they correspond to different devices.
Let me know the result.
