Hello, I am looking for suggestions for a nephews build. The gaming laptop isnt hacking it anymore. His parents told him 1K sans monitor. I can kick in the PSU, and I can get him a keyboard. I might have an extra HD around, I need to check.

Approximate Purchase Date: 2 weeks +

Budget Range: 1K

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming/Video Editing/Youtube video creation

Are you buying a monitor: Separately / Not included in build, but suggestions for best $200/$300 options appreciated

Parts being upgraded: None

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: None

Location: Houston TX

Parts Preferences: None specifically

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: The higher the better, a monitor would be a separate purchase, would like to 1440 as a minimum

Additional Comments: No PSU needed, or kbd needed. Include the HDD, just incase. I should have an RMA EVGA Platinum 805W modular PSU replaced soon. I bought it last May, it stopped working after a week, I got it to work another day, then nothing. I bought a Gold from MicroCenter. I finally did the RMA this week and shipped it off Wednesday.

Solution
Your nephew has a very nice uncle/aunt.

Some guidelines:

For a balanced gamer, budget about 2x the cost of the cpu for the graphics card.
Likely a $200 cpu and a $400 graphics card.

Include a SSD of 240gb or better. Today, Samsung EVO is best for performance and reliability.

Pay what you need to for a good monitor. It will be with him for a long time.
27" 1440 x 1020 resolution. It will likely be IPS panel or PLS which give better image than tn.
Go see the candidates in person if you can.

Buy a case with good ventilation. Two 120mm front intake fans or better, and make them filtered to keep your parts clean.
Looks count; buy one that nephew thinks looks good.

You might wait a couple of weeks to see what intel announces on aug21.

Here is what I would build. Very close to what I have for my own content creation/gaming computer.

$1001.65 before the monitor. I went for a slightly more expensive g-sync monitor since I picked the GTX1060 video card. You could sub that out for a RX 580 and play everything at 1080p on ultra and possibly get a cheaper monitor.

Monitor + OS included, If you want to lower the budget you can go with a gtx 1060 ( great for 1080p) , but this 1070 will take advantage of the 144hz monitor. Also i didnt add a HDD ic case you find one as you said :p ... I added a PSU casue im feeling yours wont be the best of quality :D ( ? )

If you want him to play at 1440p at ideal FPS, I would suggest taking your budget up to 1250 ish. This would get you into a 1080 or you can wait to see if you can save money by using a VEGA card. If not, just sub out the 1080 with a 1060 6gb and you are at your price range.

As far as monitors go, I recently went with the Dell 24 inch 1400p 165+hz GYSNC. Dell - S2417DG .

*Note* you can still clip some money off of this on the RAM and case. The 1600 comes with a great stock cooler that is plenty of OC the CPU to 3.8. Very easy.
