High Ping Even with Fast Internet

Hello,

The issue I am having is that whenever anybody else in the house is downloading/uploading anything (either via wired or wifi), in-game ping is jumping to the 300 range. This is odd, as I pay for 60mbps download and 6 mbps upload. I typically get even more that this, however, sometimes getting up to 75 download and 7 upload (according to the speedof.me test).

The router I am using is a Netgear r6400, and I am using a wired connection. I use the WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption protocol along with a very secure password for the router and wifi, so this shouldn't be the issue. I have also updated the firmware on the router, just in case.

Is this normal? If not, any idea about setting I can configure to prevent this from happening? Or is this something I have to speak to my ISP about? Thanks!

Your internet bandwith (aka speed) and latency (ping) are two completely different things.
Ping is dependant on the distance between you are the server you are connecting and the routing your ISP does. You can have a gigabit connection but you will still get high ping if you are connecting from USA to some asian server (that's why you should always play multiplayer games in your region).

Now if your ping to some server is low but it increases when someone's downloading then they are probably using download managers or torrents which can choke your connection to death. Download managers opens lots of connections (10 or more) and they can completely drain the speed, limit their internet speed to something 80% of your max speed and you...

Normal browsing and even streaming youtube video's have almost negligible affect on pings.

You might need to contact your ISP since 60 Mbit/s download and 6 Mbit/s upload isn't that fast. Also, the more devices use the said connection, the slower it gets. Provided that your router has default (equal) connection speed divider in place, with 2 devices, you're looking 30 Mbit/s download and 3 Mbit/s upload per device. With 4 devices, the speed per device is 15 Mbit/s down and 1.5 Mbit/s up and so on.

In my household, have 100 Mbit/s download and 20 Mbit/s upload. And so far, i haven't had issues with slow connection despite multiple devices.

What he said.

Thank you! I have traced the source of the high ping down to download managers running in the background. I set them to 80% like you suggested, and haven't had any issues so far. Thanks!
