Am i having CPU bottleneck of the GPU?

I just built a new $3000 system running two GTX 1080 Seahawk X cards in SLI. CPU is the new Kaby Lake i5 7600K, which I am overclocking to 4.2ghz. My issue is, I am only getting at most 45-55% GPU utilization while playing BF4 multiplayer at Ultra settings 1440p. FPS fluctuates from 80-125, but mostly stays around 100.

Is this a CPU problem?
SLI compatibility problem? I want to see both GPUs working and getting the framerate up. Any ideas? Not sure if I need to upgrade to the i7 7700K or not. I figured the i5 7600k should be fine since I'm only a gamer. Im not a video editor and gaming is all this system is for.

Solution
CPU bottlenecking completely depends on the game, graphical settings and resolution.

This may be a case of SLI issues.

What usage is each of your CPU cores running at while playing BF1? If atleast 1 is near 100%, that is the limiting factor.

Also, what refresh rate is your monitor? If it is below 100hz, there is no issue here.

Also, it isn't stupid to run dual 1080s with i5s. If your aiming for 75hz goals, this is completely fine.

What confuses me is that the GPU will both go up to near max usage when I ran 3dmark benchmarking. Which makes me think it might be something to do with SLI and game compatibility

Seems like a pretty mismatched cpu to gpu setup, honestly not sure if it's bottlenecking though, what's your cpu usage when gpu usage is 45-55? If it's 90-100 percent it probably is bottlenecking

SLI isn't that great any longer. But really if you are trying for extremely high frame rates you need at least an i7-7700k to get the most out of the cards. Frostbite engine is indeed a CPU dependent platform, so the more the better.

X299 or X99 wouldn't make a huge impact for the majority of games and it would increase the platform cost a lot. Getting the PCIe lanes just isn't worth it, you really just need core clock for putting up high FPS.

In your situation I would swap the pair of 1080s for a 1080 Ti and upgrade the CPU to the 7700k.

yes of course , seems like i missed that , no one runs dual 1080's with an i5 ! that's just plain stupid @OP

I dont know about stupid. Perhaps naive. It's my first build.

I just ordered an i7 7700K and an NZXT Kraken X62 liquid cooler. Hopefully that will do the trick. Now its a $3500 build....ouch

Thanks everybody!

dude , an i5 on a 1151 socket will overheat ! running a 1080 , let alone two of them . it's not just number crunching and the benchmarks they give you . i5 is Not for running a 1080 !

Sorry to break it to you, the power of a GPU will not affect the temps of the CPU. If the CPU is under 100% load with an Rx 550, it should produce roughly the same heat as when under 100% load with dual Titan Xps.

Also, it will depend on the cooler in play, case's airflow, and ambient temperatures.

Not sure where you found that myth but it is wrong.

yeah like everyone else is saying you're running a i5 you're gonna be experience bottlenecks especially with a 1080 SLI, many people can achieve great and balanced performance with a 1080 SLI with a i7-7700k. I would definitely look into getting one or wait on upgrading to the 2011 or 2066 setup
