mouclass.sys related BSOD after installing graphics card under certain circumstances

Hello,

Yesterday i installed a new graphics card (gtx 1050 ti from ASUS) which seems to be working just fine. However, under certain circumstances I get a BSOD when booting the PC. It occurs just after Windows (7) boots up and before the login screen pops up. I am running a two monitor setup.

Bug check string is KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and the drivers involved are mouclass.sys and ntoskrnl.exe.

The funny thing is that the BSOD does not occur with either the mouse (tt esports theron) and a single monitor plugged in at startup OR both monitors but not the mouse plugged in. With both monitors AND the mouse plugged in the BSOD will occur. When I plug in the mouse AFTER logging in, everything works. It seems to fail just at that single moment before the login screen pops up. At this point the mouse and keyboard lights turn off briefly and back on again which is normal behavior I think (it has been like that before)?

The mouse and the two monitors worked fine with my old graphics card, so I guess I can rule out hardware problems with those.

I did some research on this but I could not find much (well I did find the web site though^^). I wonder whether there is a problem with the main board or PSU such that it fails to provide enough energy for both the mouse and the graphics card with two monitors connected at that single moment during boot. The PSU should be good enough as it is >500W and the minimum system requirements for the graphics card is 300W. The main board is kind of old (ASUS P8Z68-M PRO with Intel Z68 (Cougar Point) [B3] chipset).

I tried switching the ports on which I plug the monitors (HDMI, DVI) as well as the USB port for the mouse. I also tried reinstalling the drivers for both the mouse and the graphics card. Both did not help.

I am out of ideas now. I can live with it, I just have to plug out the mouse before boot and plug it back in after (which is pretty stupid IMHO). I wonder whether someone else has had a similar problem or any idea on how to solve it.

Thanks a lot!

Solution
could you link up the dump files in your c:\windows\minidump, last 3-4 should do the trick I would like to look at them to see if anything is showing why is bsod-ing on you.

meanwhile may I suggest trying a different mouse (like a plain Jane mouse not a gaming one) and try to boot to see if you get the same bsod reaction or not.

Here are some of the dumps: (removed)

I have tried using a different mouse (Logitech Wireless Mouse M545, don't have any others), same results.

I also did some driver updates using Driver Booster 4 software (included USB controller, chipset), still no difference.

Found it!

Source of the error is the MS6Filter.sys driver for the Thermaltake eSPORTS Theron.

I used the "WhoCrashed" application to analyze the dumps which pointed me to this driver. So I uninstalled all software from Thermaltake as well as ALL the mouse drivers in the windows device manager (including hidden devices). Then I reinstalled the drivers by plugging in my backup mouse (Logitec). Rebooting and cold starting worked both so I switched back to the tt esports mouse and checked the drivers (device manager > Mice and other pointing devices > HDI-compliant mouse > properties > Driver > Driver Details), MS6Filter.sys is no longer listed. The mouse works fine and no more BSODs while booting (so far, fingers crossed).

I think that driver is used by the configuration program to set up the DPI profiles and LED lights. The programmed profiles are still working because they are saved on the mouse. If I want to change them in the future I will have to make sure to remove that driver again.

It seems strange to me though that simply switching the mouse did not do the trick. Apparently that driver gets also loaded for non-Thermaltake mice.
