I want to upgrade my pc to keep it up to date with modern games. Im looking to buy a gtx 1060 evga ftw gpu and hopefully an r5 1600x. Problem is i dont know which one i should upgrade to first. I think gpu, but i dont trust my self with this decision so can someone please help me out? My budget for a gpu is about £350 and i do take aesthetics into matter. If you think a different gpu is better please also tell me as there arent many reviews on the one specified.
Thanks!

Both honestly need replacing. As Maxalge stated, that FX6300 will bottleneck a 1060 big time. You won't see a massive increase with either one until you replace both, but I think that if budget constraints will only allow you to one right now, then the CPU should be upgraded. Just remember, if you get something other than a FX processor, you will also need a new motherboard. Unless your motherboard is really bad, you could go with a FX8350. Not as good as the R5 1600 but it will play any current game out there today with no problems. That is what I upgraded my 6300 to because I was able to get a used one for 25.00. I have a 1060 GPU and the combo works very well together. The R5 will last you longer, but if you on a budget, the...

your platform first

the 6300 is far too weak for a 1060, most likely you would barely see improvement over the 7850 due to bottlenecking

the 1600x is also not worth the price premium over the 1600
