Hi Guys,

So I'm planning to build a gaming/productivity pc next month and it is going to be my very first build. I was wondering what do I need to buy first, should I buy a 2x8gb ram and the SSD later, or ssd and 2x4gb ram first, then another 2x4gb ram later.

Tasks:

  • ■ Mostly gaming together with a bunch of browser tabs and spotify in the background.
    ■ 3D modelling
    ■ Programming
    ■ Video and Photo editing
    ■ Studying Game development using Unreal or Unity.

Current Specs:

  • ■ cpu am4: Amd Ryzen 5 1600 6 Core 3.2-3.6 ghz 16mb 65W
    ■ mb am4: Asus Prime B350 Plus
    ■ vga nvidia: Gigabyte GTX 1060 G1 Gaming 3gb
    ■ ram ddr4: G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x4gb 2400 8gb CL15 (F4 2400C15D 8GVR)
    ■ hdd 3.5: WDC Blue 1tb
    ■ psu: Seasonic M12II Evo 520watts 80+ Bronze Full Modular
    ■ casing: NZXT Source 340|S340 Accented Black
    ■ monitor: BenQ 24 GW2406Z LED IPS frameless
    ■ cooler CPU: Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED
    ■ cooler fan: Corsair AF120 Quiet LED 120mm dual x 2
    ■ hdd / ssd: Samsung 850 EVO 250gb

I was also thinking that if I buy an SSD later then I would need to reinstall all of my stuffs from the HDD into the SSD right?
Maybe you can also comment on my build. Thanks a lot.

Solution
You want both really for productivity IMO

The ram I would say is more important.

Your build ??
Its good , you don't need an aftermarket cooler though & you don't need those extra case fans.

That's $40/£40+ saving right there.
I think you can still walk away with 8GB of RAM with all those software. I option for 2x4GB RAM, and an SSD. The SSD will improve your programs'/software's loading times, while the RAMs will improve your PC's overall performance.

16GB of RAM will greatly increase your rendering times etc but an SSD will reduce boot times and just make your overall system feel much more responsive and quicker. And yes, once you get an ssd you will need to reinstall windows 10 on it. I would recommend the SSD first and also, don't but 2x4GB RAM. B350 motherboards don't support RAM speeds over 2666MHz if you have more than 2 RAM modules. So go for 8x1 instead and upgrade to 8x2 in the future. I would also recommend (if you can) the Ryzen 7 1700 as the 2 additional cores would definitely help you with those 3d modeling tasks etc.

Thanks, that was actually my initial plan and then buy another 2x4gb ram a month after. I was just not sure how much ram i would be needing for the meantime.

I think I would go with the 2x4gb ram and ssd first. As per my research, paired rams are better than buying a single one because of the dual channel architecture and on my b350 mobos' specs, I saw that I can overclock the rams up to 3200MHz and just haven't researched yet whether the MSI or the Asus one would be better. And about the Ryzen 7, I don't actually have an extra 130 dollar to spend and I'm planning to just upgrade after 2 or 3 years.

Yes, I will be getting both of them. Right now, I'm just planning to have 8gb of ram & ssd first and then add 8 more gb of ram a month later. Regarding the cpu cooler, I was planning to overclock the ryzen 5 1600 to 4GHz and idk if the wraith spire will be enough. And about the case fans, i dont really know much about it yet and just thought that buying an aftermarket one will cool my system better but I'll be researching on it more.

Not to bring your hopes down but hitting 4.0GHz with the 1600 might be difficult. Most chips I see OC to about 3.8 - 3.9GHz. 4.0 are lucky or if you push past the recommended voltage. 4.1 is just silicon lottery winners. The Wraithe spire with it's fan curve at 100% is really not THAT loud and it keeps temps decently low at 3.8 - 4 GHz. The S340 comes with 2 fans pre-installed. Though if you're not going to buy case fans, remove the one on the top and place it as an intake fan on the front for better airflow. Also the Corsair Vengeance LPX (1x8)GB Stick 2400MHz CL14 is on Amazon for about 77$. You should be able to overclock it to 3000Mhz CL18 and maybe 17 if you're lucky. Don't push the CL past 18 though.
