Should I upgrade CPU or upgrade both CPU and Mobo

I'm really tempted to upgrade my i3-4150 for better performance even though it is holding up pretty well playing some of the popular pc games. My i3-4150 is paired up with a H97M mobo, but I'm debating if it is worthwhile to just upgrade the i3-4150 cpu to something more powerful like an i5 CPU for more performance or do you suggest I go ahead and get rid of both the cpu/mobo altogether for a far better cpu like a kaby lake or ryzen?

Your motherboard is compatible with the i7-4790K. But you won't be able to overclock. My friend has a 4790K on a H81 or H85 motherboard (I'm not sure).

The 4790K can hit 4.4 GHz on 1 core and 4.0 GHz across 4 cores at stock. It is one of the best processors for gaming.

You may have to get a good aftermarket cooler if your temperatures go above 80°C frequently.
