Take your original sticks out and replace them with your new modules and see if it reads 8GB. Then add your older modules in. If it's still a problem, then you have a compatibility issue. Memory is sold in kits (2x, 4x) for a reason: they are made on the same production cycle and are guaranteed to work together. Even if you have the same model memory, if purchased at a later time, the memory vendor may have changed the chip module manufacturer.

Another thing that can cause problems among different memory is slight variances in silicon manufacturing that may cause problems between different DIMMs. It's hit or miss getting non-kit form modules to work together even if the exact same model.
