Replacing a GTX 770 2GB card for?

I have an EVGA GTX 770 2GB GPU (GK 104, 28nm, Rev A2) plugged into my 1150 LGA Asus ROG board with an Intel i7-4770K at 4.0GHz and running 16GB of ram. PSU is a Corsair TX950. CPU is water cooled, the GPU isn't and won't be.

I'm looking to plug this GTX 770 into my son's computer, which has the same mobo, CPU and RAM, and deliver it to him at Fort Hood. Once I do that, I'm wanting a newer card for me that won't break the bank. Looking at something around $300 or less. I'm on a fixed income so money is tight, but I can wiggle a bit. I used to be highly skilled at building computers and staying up on the latest tech, but after an explosion and TBI, which required brain surgery, in Iraq, I can often get confused about specs. I've researched this and frankly, I'm at a loss. I want the newer card for my computer since I play flight sims, FPS games....think BF...all of them, COD....all of them, and so on. I run a 24" 1920x1080 monitor. Since I'm doing this for my son, I may as well give him the older shit and me use the newer shit.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

honestly the nvidia gtx1060 or amd rx580 would be huge upgrades over the gtx770. but currently there is a crypto currency mining fad that has artificially raised the prices of all gpus. the rx580 8gb "should be" around $200 and the gtx1060 6gb "should be" around $225. that is what they cost on a good deal about 6 months ago. right now both hover around $300. if you have the patience to wait a couple more months for the prices to drop back down to realistic levels you could save a few bucks.

with your monitor and resolution i dont see much point in upgrading to any higher performance graphics card.

thanks for serving our country.

In my opinion and from personal experience, the GTX 1060( i like the asus strix version) is a very good performance/price GPU
I also upgraded from a 770 to a 1060
If you have more money i'd obviously say go for a 1070 or more

if you keep your eye out on slickdeals.net you may snag a gtx1060 6gb or rx580 8gb for a decent price. the prices have kinda been tapering down a little bit lately. if you do go for the gtx1060 make sure it is a 6gb version and not the 3gb version as there are different cards.
