Windows 7 Custom WIM

I have recently learned that WIM images can be modified with 7zip, allowing you to insert files directly into a WIM for quick minimal changes to a WIM (removing an icon from a certain user's desktop).

I also learned that the Microsoft Windows 7 Download tool places a generic Windows 7 WIM onto the flash drive for its imaging process.

If I made a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive, but then went in and replaced the generic Windows 7 WIM with our own custom WIM after it was finished, would it deploy our own custom WIM?

I keep wanting to test this myself, but never have the time to play around with it.

Our newer computers have 256 gigabyte 960 Evos and i7-7700k in them (Thanks to yours truly) and I have a Corsair Voyager GTX flash drive so I was hoping for;

8 gigabyte WIM / 400 megabytes a second Flash Drive = a 20 second image process

40 seconds would also be acceptable lol.

i used this program https://www.ntlite.com/ to create my custom win 7 installer. you can add/remove features, create/edit users and tons of other stuff. it takes all the changes you wish to make and then creates a custom iso for you to use.

i'd assume you'd be able to create/use your own custom WIM the same way to deploy on your network.

Looks interesting but I was looking for a free tool.

My current way for making/updating an image is using the windows 7 usb tool to make a fresh generic Windows 7 Image.

Then I run windows updates till they have no more updates.

Then I navigate to the folder for that image on our storage server and manually install any programs needed, along with running all custom scripts I wrote for that type of image (changing the desktop to our own, inserting other files into places they need to be, ...)

After all that I sysprep the image and upload the sysprep'd image to our server.

nlite is a free tool :) been using it since win xp days and still use it for win 10 customizing. it allows for all that customizing and then makes the iso file in one shot for you. then you do whatever you need with it to distribute it.

take a look again at the download page and you'll see the links to get it. it's a nice and easy to use utility. https://www.ntlite.com/download/ they just ask for you to buy a "license" as to support it, not cause you have to ;)
