Upgrade from gtx970 or upgrade cpu?

Been playing a bunch of PubG and am not at all happy with framerates. I've been considering a CPU upgrade since ryzen came out and am currently waiting to see what coffee lake looks like.

So here's my question. What is going to benefit me the most considering my current system setup, a cpu/MB or gfx card (considering that I'll need a 1080/1080ti class to make it worth the upgrade from a 970)

System:
I7 950 with 12gb RAM
Gtx 970
2560x1440 monitor (an issue for my fps problems I suspect)

I'll end up getting *both* by next summer but right now I'm just trying to decide which one to do before Christmas so I'm not popped for a grand in upgrade.

I will say the 950 has served me well for a long long time now!

Solution
I still have my old i7 now, (Hover over my name badge to see full specs) and it is also paired with a GTX970. Personally, the FPS intensive games will give the old 950 a kicking, like BeamNG Drive that i have been playing for a few years now. I get to the point where the 970 is maxing out - just before the cpu's cores do. By the end of a session, i have recorded all 4 CPU cores @ 100% GPU core @100% GPU memory @ 90-95% used, and just over 10GB of RAM used. This is on a huge map, with 3 - 4 AI cars and graphics manually configured to run high. I am also running the monitor @ 120Hz.

I would personally do the GPU. You can go with whichever card you wish, seeing as you are going to upgrade your system at the end of the year. You can take...

Good luck for the future rig build man!

So I tend to agree that the gpu is probably where I'd get the most performance boost, but I think the cpu/MB are probably the parts most in need of replacement. The other issue thats worth considering is Nvidia is likely to release volta either very late this year or early next. We are sitting right at the edge of a gpu refresh cycle while the major CPU refresh cycle is going on right now (ryzen and coffee lake). I also need an ssd (been waiting to get a M.2 SSD).

TLDR, I think the wise course of action is to get a coffee lake or ryzen CPU/MB/ram/ssd setup and snag a GPU when volta is released, and hopefully by then the miners will have had a market crash or something and it will be possible to buy a GPU for msrp or less (wouldn't that be nice? Lol).

I also have a microcenter just down the road which makes CPUs quite a bit cheaper in many cases (I saw the 1800x for as little as 339 or 349 I think recently)..
